Dear brothers and sisters,

We begin Holy Week with Palm Sunday, also known as Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. We thus begin our contemplation of these profound mysteries of our faith. We will listen to the Passion of the Lord according to Saint Matthew and honor Christ with our “Hosannas” as we carry blessed palms in our hands. We will then enter into the Sacred Paschal Triduum, which extends from Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday—three very important celebrations: the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and Death, and the Resurrection of the Lord.

On Holy Thursday we will gather at 7 pm to remember the Lord’s Last Supper with his apostles. During the bilingual Mass we will also celebrate the Washing of the Feet, recalling the commandment of love that Jesus gave to all his followers. At the conclusion of the Mass, we will have a Eucharistic procession inside the church, followed by time for prayer and meditation until 11 pm. In this way, we will also celebrate that Jesus instituted the Eucharist and the Priesthood.

On Good Friday we will gather for the Stations of the Cross through the streets, in Spanish, beginning at 11 am at the church. Our parishioners have been rehearsing for several weeks to represent the scenes of the Lord’s Passion. We will begin at the church, then proceed north on Keeler Ave, east on 144th Street, south on Karlov Ave, and enter the parking lot, where the Crucifixion will be represented. Afterwards, we will return to the church for the burial of Jesus. At the conclusion we will have the Adoration of the Cross and Communion. Later, at 3 pm, we will celebrate the Stations of the Cross in English inside the church. Finally, at 7 pm, we will gather for the bilingual Celebration of the Lord’s Passion and Adoration of the Cross. During this liturgy we will read the Passion according to Saint John, pray the Solemn Intercessions, venerate the Cross, and receive Holy Communion.

On Holy Saturday, at noon, we will have the blessing of Easter baskets, in which we will bless the foods to be used on Easter Sunday or those associated with this celebration. Finally, at 7 pm, we will celebrate the Great Easter Vigil, the most important celebration of the liturgical year, in which we commemorate the holy night when Christ rose from the dead. During this Vigil we will have 23 baptisms of children over the age of seven, 4 adults will receive the three sacraments of initiation (baptism, first communion, and confirmation), and 14 adults will receive their first communion and confirmation. Our heartfelt congratulations to the new Christians and to those brothers and sisters who are completing their sacraments of initiation.

On Easter Sunday we will continue the celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection with two Masses in English at 7:30 am and 9:30 am, and two Masses in Spanish at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. We will not have the 6:00 pm Mass. Those who have celebrated the Easter Vigil do not need to attend Mass on Sunday, since they have already fully participated in the celebration of Easter.

Thus, brothers and sisters, we are entering a wonderful week, filled with grace and mercy, overflowing with God’s love for humanity. Let us place ourselves under the maternal protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who stood at the foot of the Cross. May she and Saint Joseph accompany us during these days in which we also accompany their beloved Son. May Saint Augustine intercede for all of us, so that we may live the deep joy of being Catholic Christians as we celebrate the great Solemnity of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Estamos comenzando la Semana Santa con el Domingo de Ramos o Domingo de la Pasión del Señor. Iniciamos así nuestra contemplación de estos profundos misterios de nuestra fe. Escucharemos la Pasión del Señor según San Mateo y honraremos a Cristo con nuestros “Hosannas”, portando en nuestras manos los ramos bendecidos. Luego entraremos en el Sagrado Triduo Pascual, que va desde el Jueves Santo hasta el Domingo de Pascua, tres celebraciones muy importantes: la Última Cena, la Crucifixión y Muerte, y la Resurrección del Señor.

El Jueves Santo nos reuniremos a las 7 pm para recordar la Última Cena del Señor con sus apóstoles. Durante la Misa también realizaremos el Lavatorio de los Pies, para recordar el mandamiento del amor que Jesús dio a todos sus seguidores. Al finalizar la Misa, tendremos una procesión eucarística dentro de la iglesia y un tiempo para orar y meditar hasta las 11 pm. De este modo, también celebraremos que Jesús instituyó la Eucaristía y el Sacerdocio.

El Viernes Santo nos reuniremos para el Viacrucis por las calles, en español, comenzando a las 11 am en la iglesia. Nuestros parroquianos han estado ensayando por varias semanas para representar las escenas de la Pasión del Señor. Iniciaremos en la iglesia y luego caminaremos hacia el norte por Keeler Ave, al oriente por la calle 144, al sur por Karlov Ave, y entraremos al estacionamiento, donde se representará la Crucifixión. Posteriormente, nos dirigiremos de nuevo a la iglesia para el entierro de Jesús. Al finalizar, tendremos la Adoración de la Cruz y la comunión. Más tarde, a las 3 pm, celebraremos el Viacrucis en inglés dentro de la iglesia. Finalmente, a las 7 pm nos reuniremos para la Celebración bilingüe de la Pasión del Señor y la Adoración de la Cruz. Durante esta liturgia leeremos la Pasión según San Juan, elevaremos las intercesiones solemnes, adoraremos la cruz y recibiremos la comunión.

El Sábado Santo tendremos, al mediodía, la bendición de las canastas pascuales, en la cual bendeciremos los alimentos que se usarán el Domingo de Pascua o aquellos relacionados con esta celebración. Finalmente, a las 7 pm, celebraremos la Gran Vigilia Pascual, la celebración más importante del año litúrgico, en la que conmemoramos la noche santa en que Cristo resucitó. Durante esta Vigilia tendremos 23 bautismos de niños de 7 años, 4 adultos recibirán los tres sacramentos de iniciación (bautismo, primera comunión y confirmación), y 14 adultos recibirán dos sacramentos (primera comunión y confirmación). Felicitamos de corazón a los nuevos cristianos y a aquellos hermanos y hermanas que completan sus sacramentos de iniciación.

El Domingo de Pascua continuaremos la celebración de la Resurrección del Señor con dos Misas en inglés, a las 7:30 am y 9:30 am, y dos Misas en español, a las 11:30 am y 1:30 pm. No tendremos la Misa de las 6 pm. Quienes hayan celebrado la Vigilia Pascual no necesitan asistir a Misa el domingo, ya que habrán participado plenamente en la celebración de la Pascua.

De modo que, hermanos y hermanas, estamos entrando en una semana maravillosa, llena de gracia y misericordia, repleta del amor de Dios por el ser humano. Acojámonos a la protección maternal de la Santísima Virgen María, quien estuvo al pie de la Cruz. Que ella y San José nos acompañen en estos días en los que también acompañamos a su Hijo. Que San Agustín interceda por todos nosotros, para que vivamos la profunda alegría de ser cristianos católicos al celebrar la gran Solemnidad de la Pascua de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
