Dear brothers and sisters,

This Thursday, August 27, we will celebrate a very special day in honor of Saint Monica and Saint Augustine, our parish patron saint. I invite you to join us for this day of prayer and celebration. We will begin with our 8:30 a.m. daily Mass in honor of Saint Monica. We will then have Eucharistic Adoration from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. In the afternoon, Confessions will be available from 5:30 to 6:40 p.m., followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 6:45 p.m. We will conclude with a Solemn Bilingual Mass in honor of Saint Monica and Saint Augustine at 7:00 p.m., during which we will also bless a new painting of the two saints. On Friday, August 28, the Feast of Saint Augustine, we will have our 8:30 a.m. daily Mass in honor of our patron saint.

Saint Monica was born around the year 331 in Tagaste, in North Africa, and died in Ostia, Italy, on August 27, 387. A wife and mother, she devoted much of her life to praying for the conversion of her husband and, especially, her son Augustine. For years, she shed tears and pleaded with God for her son, who had turned away from the faith and was searching for truth along other paths. Finally, after a long interior struggle, Augustine converted, was baptized by Saint Ambrose in Milan, and dedicated his life to the service of Christ. For this reason, Saint Monica is a beloved patron for all those who weep, suffer, and pray for the conversion of our loved ones, especially our children who have turned away from the faith. Her story teaches us never to lose hope. Her tears were not tears of despair, but those of a mother who placed her trust in God and persevered in prayer. May Saint Monica accompany all parents who carry in their hearts the concern for a child or family member who has drifted away from God.

On August 28, the Church celebrates Saint Augustine. He was born on November 13, 354, in Tagaste and died on August 28, 430, as Bishop of Hippo. For approximately nine years, he was involved with Manichaeism as he searched for answers to the great questions about God, truth, and the meaning of life. His conversion in Milan, after years of searching and through the prayers of his mother, culminated in his baptism by Saint Ambrose in 387. He was later ordained a priest and, in 395, became Bishop of Hippo, where he carried out an intense pastoral ministry for more than 35 years. Saint Augustine left the Church an extraordinary wealth of writings, including his famous Confessions and The City of God. His thought, preaching, and testimony of conversion have had an enormous influence on theology, philosophy, and Christian life throughout the centuries. The Church recognizes him as a Bishop and Doctor of the Church.

What a joy it is to have Saint Augustine as our parish patron saint and, alongside him, Saint Monica, his mother. In them we find two great witnesses to the grace of God: a mother who never stopped praying for her son and a son who, after searching for many years, found in Christ the Truth for which he longed. May they intercede for our families and help us to persevere always in our journey of faith.

Finally, we also welcome all the students, teachers, staff members, and families of our parish school as the new school year begins this Monday, August 24. May God bless this new school year! Este jueves 27 de agosto celebraremos un día muy especial en honor a Santa Mónica y San Agustín, nuestro santo patrono parroquial. Los invito a acompañarnos durante este día de oración y celebración. Comenzaremos con la Misa diaria de las 8:30 a.m., en honor a Santa Mónica. Después tendremos Adoración Eucarística de 9:00 a.m. a 7:00 p.m. Por la tarde habrá confesiones de 5:30 a 6:40 p.m., la Bendición con el Santísimo Sacramento a las 6:45 p.m., y concluiremos con una Misa Solemne bilingüe en honor de Santa Mónica y San Agustín a las 7:00 p.m., donde también bendeciremos una nueva pintura de los dos santos. El viernes 28 de agosto, fiesta de San Agustín, tendremos nuestra Misa diaria de las 8:30 a.m. en honor de nuestro santo patrono.

Santa Mónica nació alrededor del año 331 en Tagaste, en el norte de África, y murió en Ostia, Italia, el 27 de agosto del año 387. Esposa y madre, dedicó gran parte de su vida a orar por la conversión de su esposo y, especialmente, de su hijo Agustín. Durante años derramó lágrimas y suplicó a Dios por aquel hijo que se había alejado de la fe y buscaba la verdad por otros caminos. Finalmente, después de una larga lucha interior, Agustín se convirtió, fue bautizado por San Ambrosio en Milán y entregó su vida al servicio de Cristo. Por eso Santa Mónica es una patrona muy querida para todos aquellos que lloramos, sufrimos y oramos por la conversión de nuestros familiares, especialmente por nuestros hijos que se han alejado de la fe. Su historia nos enseña a no perder la esperanza. Sus lágrimas no fueron lágrimas de desesperación, sino de una madre que puso su confianza en Dios y perseveró en la oración. Que Santa Mónica acompañe a todos los padres y madres que hoy llevan en el corazón la preocupación por un hijo o familiar que se ha alejado de Dios.

El 28 de agosto, la Iglesia celebra a San Agustín. Nació el 13 de noviembre del año 354 en Tagaste y murió el 28 de agosto del año 430, siendo obispo de Hipona. Durante aproximadamente nueve años estuvo vinculado al maniqueísmo, mientras buscaba respuestas a las grandes preguntas sobre Dios, la verdad y el sentido de la vida. Su conversión en Milán, después de años de búsqueda y de las oraciones de su madre, culminó con su bautismo por San Ambrosio en el año 387. Más tarde fue ordenado sacerdote y, en el año 395, se convirtió en obispo de Hipona, donde ejerció durante más de 35 años un intenso ministerio pastoral. San Agustín dejó a la Iglesia una extraordinaria riqueza de escritos, entre ellos sus famosas Confesiones y La Ciudad de Dios. Su pensamiento, su predicación y su testimonio de conversión han ejercido una enorme influencia en la teología, la filosofía y la vida cristiana a través de los siglos. La Iglesia lo reconoce como Obispo y Doctor de la Iglesia.

Qué alegría tener a San Agustín como santo patrono de nuestra parroquia y, junto a él, a Santa Mónica, su madre. En ellos encontramos dos grandes testigos de la gracia de Dios: una madre que nunca dejó de orar por su hijo y un hijo que, después de buscar durante años, encontró en Cristo la Verdad que tanto anhelaba. Que ellos intercedan por nuestras familias y nos ayuden a perseverar siempre en nuestro camino de fe.

Finalmente, damos también la bienvenida a todos los estudiantes, maestros, miembros del staff y familias de nuestra escuela parroquial, que comienza este lunes 24 de agosto. ¡Que Dios bendiga este nuevo año escolar! Los esperamos también en nuestro Rummage Sale el sábado 29 de agosto. Que Santa Mónica y San Agustín intercedan por todos nosotros. ¡Que tengan una semana verdaderamente bendecida!
