Fr. Robinson's Message 9/6/26

Dear brothers and sisters,

St. Augustine Parish is blessed to have a school. St. Christopher School is not simply a school that happens to be located on our parish property. It is our parish school, and the parish administers it. This is an important distinction. And because it is our school, the responsibility for its present and its future belongs to all of us as a parish community.

I want to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude to Mrs. Nicole Tzoumas, our principal, for her leadership and dedication to our students, families, and teachers. I am also very grateful to the members of our current School Board for the time, experience, and commitment they have given to our school.

In our parish, we have three important advisory bodies: the Finance Council, the Pastoral Council, and the School Board. Each has a particular role in helping the pastor and the parish fulfill our mission. In addition, many people and groups contribute to the life of St. Christopher School, including Athletics, Bingo, the FSA, and the School Board. All of these are important, but they have different responsibilities.

The Family School Association (FSA) is especially concerned with creating a sense of belonging in our school community. Through activities and events, the FSA creates opportunities that benefit the wellbeing of our students and families and brings our school community together. All of our current school families are part of this effort, and we are grateful for their participation and support.

The School Board, on the other hand, has a more strategic responsibility. The Board helps us look at the bigger picture and the future of St. Christopher School. This includes long-term strategy, financial sustainability, relationships with alumni and benefactors, and strengthening the Catholic identity and mission of our school.

Sometimes we may think that the current school families should be the ones responsible for running the School Board and keeping the school financially strong. Our current families certainly do a great deal, but ultimately, the responsibility for our school belongs to the whole parish community.

I want to be clear that we are not starting this work today. Our parish has been working to strengthen and support St. Christopher School, and we are committed to continuing that work. But securing the future of a school is an ongoing responsibility, and it requires us to think ahead and to build strong leadership before difficulties arise.

We have seen in recent years that when difficult decisions have to be made about Catholic schools, it is not the current parents who make those decisions. Ultimately, those decisions involve parish and Archdiocesan leadership. This is why we cannot wait until a major crisis appears at the school doors—or until a roof, building, or financial problem forces us to act—to begin thinking about the future.

The time to strengthen and secure the future of St. Christopher School is now.

We need parishioners who can bring their experience, ideas, professional knowledge, and, above all, a love for Catholic education and for our whole parish community. We need people who can help us think about where our school should be five, ten, or twenty years from now.

If you have a connection with St. Christopher School, experience that could benefit our school, or simply a desire to help secure its future, I invite you to prayerfully consider applying to become a member of the School Board.

Let us take care of the future of our school. Let us work together so that St. Christopher School can continue to form young people in faith, knowledge, and service for many years to come.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas:

La Parroquia de San Agustín tiene la bendición de contar con una escuela. La Escuela San Cristóbal no es simplemente una escuela que está ubicada en nuestra propiedad parroquial. Es la escuela de nuestra parroquia, y la parroquia es quien la administra. Esta es una distinción importante. Y porque es nuestra escuela, la responsabilidad por su presente y su futuro pertenece a todos nosotros como comunidad parroquial.

Quiero comenzar expresando mi sincero agradecimiento a la Sra. Nicole Tzoumas, nuestra directora, por su liderazgo y dedicación a nuestros estudiantes, familias y maestros. También estoy muy agradecido con los miembros actuales del Consejo Escolar por el tiempo, experiencia y compromiso que han ofrecido a nuestra escuela.

En nuestra parroquia tenemos tres importantes organismos de consulta: el Consejo de Finanzas, el Consejo Pastoral y el Consejo Escolar. Cada uno tiene una función particular para ayudar al párroco y a la parroquia a cumplir nuestra misión. Además, muchas personas y grupos contribuyen a la vida de la Escuela San Cristóbal, incluyendo Atletismo, Bingo, la FSA y el Consejo Escolar. Todos son importantes, pero tienen responsabilidades diferentes.

La Asociación de Familias de la Escuela (FSA) se preocupa especialmente por crear un sentido de pertenencia dentro de nuestra comunidad escolar. A través de actividades y eventos, la FSA crea oportunidades que benefician el bienestar de nuestros estudiantes y familias, y ayuda a unir a nuestra comunidad escolar. Todas nuestras familias que actualmente tienen hijos en la escuela forman parte de este esfuerzo, y estamos agradecidos por su participación y apoyo.

El Consejo Escolar, por otro lado, tiene una responsabilidad más estratégica. El Consejo nos ayuda a mirar el panorama general y el futuro de la Escuela San Cristóbal. Esto incluye la planificación a largo plazo, la sostenibilidad financiera, las relaciones con nuestros exalumnos y benefactores, y el fortalecimiento de la identidad y misión católica de nuestra escuela.

A veces podemos pensar que las familias que actualmente tienen hijos en la escuela deberían ser las responsables de dirigir el Consejo Escolar y de mantener la escuela financieramente fuerte. Nuestras familias actuales ciertamente hacen mucho, pero en última instancia, la responsabilidad de nuestra escuela pertenece a toda la comunidad parroquial.

En los últimos años hemos visto que, cuando hay que tomar decisiones difíciles sobre las escuelas católicas, no son los padres actuales quienes toman esas decisiones. En última instancia, esas decisiones involucran al liderazgo de la parroquia y de la Arquidiócesis. Por eso no podemos esperar hasta que aparezca una gran crisis en las puertas de la escuela—o hasta que tengamos un problema con el techo, el edificio o las finanzas—para comenzar a pensar en el futuro.

Quiero dejar claro que este trabajo no comienza hoy. Nuestra parroquia ha estado trabajando para fortalecer y apoyar a la Escuela San Cristóbal, y estamos comprometidos a continuar este esfuerzo. Pero asegurar el futuro de una escuela es una responsabilidad continua. Requiere que pensemos con anticipación y que construyamos un liderazgo sólido antes de que aparezcan las dificultades.

El momento para fortalecer y asegurar el futuro de la Escuela San Cristóbal es ahora.

Necesitamos feligreses que puedan aportar su experiencia, sus ideas, sus conocimientos profesionales y, sobre todo, un amor por la educación católica y por toda nuestra comunidad parroquial. Necesitamos personas que nos ayuden a pensar dónde debería estar nuestra escuela dentro de cinco, diez o veinte años.

Si usted tiene una conexión con la Escuela San Cristóbal, experiencia que pueda beneficiar a nuestra escuela, o simplemente el deseo de ayudar a asegurar su futuro, le invito a considerar en oración la posibilidad de solicitar ser miembro del Consejo Escolar.

Cuidemos el futuro de nuestra escuela. Trabajemos juntos para que la Escuela San Cristóbal pueda continuar formando a nuestros jóvenes en la fe, el conocimiento y el servicio durante muchos años más.
