Welcome Letter: Deacon Roberto

Peace to you family of St. Augustine Parish. It is a very joyful experience to write these lines.

It is God’s providence that we soon will have the opportunity to meet personally. I have been assigned to serve as a permanent deacon in this almost newly formed parish of St. Augustine, what a blessing.

My name is Deacon Roberto Reyes and together with my loving wife Patricia, we both are very excited to come, meet and serve our fellow Catholics in this faithful and vibrant community. 

Just a little history: My wife and I were both born in Mexico, we met in high school and married in the church in the year 1998, and in 2000 we welcomed our first born: Patrick Emmanuel. The following year, 2001, we welcomed our daughter Zaray; then life took off. We moved to our home in Posen in the year 2004 and now reside in the Alsip area. We have been part of various ministries over the years. During those years I was invited to take on the formation for the permanent diaconate but always postponed until one day the Lord’s calling was very strong. After much discernment, my wife and I took a few years of formation before God granted us the grace of ordination as a permanent deacon in the year 2022, (same year as St. Augustine became a parish). Although women do not receive ordination and are not required to take all of the formation for ordination, my wife came along for the ride fully and took all the classes needed along with myself, in order to better grow together as a couple and also as ministers; this year she also received her certification as a catechetical leader.

We both have found the presence of the Lord in the people we encounter at every step, whether it is in church or in the hospitals or rehab homes, in the Charismatic Renewal movement, or with matrimonies, but most certainly in adoration in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.

We are thankful for the opportunity given by Rev. Robinson Ortiz, our pastor, to come and assist him in serving you in the way he feels better fits the needs of the community. We are also thankful for the people that have been with us as we journey our first few years as a deacon couple and those who participated in our formation.

We are looking forward to meeting and work along deacon Bob and his wife Patty, and all the dedicated staff of the parish and school, as we all try to strive as Christians and Catholics.

Paz a ustedes, familia de la Parroquia San Agustín. Es una experiencia muy alegre escribir estas líneas.

Es gracias a la providencia de Dios que pronto tendremos la oportunidad de conocernos personalmente. He sido asignado para servir como diácono permanente en esta parroquia casi recién formada de San Agustín, qué bendición.

Mi nombre es Diácono Roberto Reyes y junto con mi amada esposa Patricia, ambos estamos muy emocionados de venir, conocer y servir a nuestros hermanos católicos en esta comunidad fiel y vibrante.

Un poco de historia: Mi esposa y yo nacimos en México, nos conocimos en la escuela secundaria y nos casamos por la iglesia en el año 1998, y en el 2000 le dimos la bienvenida a nuestro primogénito: Patrick Emmanuel. Al año siguiente, 2001, le dimos la bienvenida a nuestra hija Zaray; luego la vida despegó. Nos mudamos a nuestra casa en Posen en el año 2004 y ahora residimos en el área de Alsip. Hemos sido parte de varios ministerios a lo largo de los años. Durante esos años me invitaron a asumir la formación para el diaconado permanente, pero siempre lo posponía hasta que un día el llamado del Señor fue muy fuerte. Después de mucho discernimiento, mi esposa y yo tomamos algunos años de formación antes de que Dios nos concediera la gracia de la ordenación como diácono permanente en el año 2022 (el mismo año en que San Agustín se convirtió en parroquia). Aunque las mujeres no reciben la ordenación y no están obligadas a tomar toda la formación para la ordenación, mi esposa se unió plenamente al proceso y tomó todas las clases necesarias junto conmigo para crecer mejor juntos como pareja y también como ministros; este año también recibió su certificación como líder catequética.

Ambos hemos encontrado la presencia del Señor en las personas que encontramos a cada paso, ya sea en la iglesia, en los hospitales o en los hogares de rehabilitación, en el movimiento de Renovación Carismática o en los matrimonios, pero sin duda en la adoración en presencia del Santísimo Sacramento.

Estamos agradecidos por la oportunidad que nos ha dado el Rev. Robinson Ortiz, nuestro párroco, de venir y ayudarlo a servirles de la manera que él crea que se adapta mejor a las necesidades de la comunidad. También estamos agradecidos por las personas que han estado con nosotros durante nuestros primeros años como matrimonio de diáconos y por quienes participaron en nuestra formación.

Estamos ansiosos por conocer y trabajar junto con el diácono Bob y su esposa Patty, y todo el personal dedicado de la parroquia y la escuela, mientras todos tratamos de esforzarnos como cristianos y católicos.
